Protection of Nursing Home Residents
The most difficult forms of abuse to detect or determine are intimidation and mental anguish.
Residents who are ridiculed, maliciously teased, cursed at, or threatened may fear retaliation if they speak up or complain about a family member, another resident, or a member of the facility staff.
Look for Signs of Neglect or Abuse
Physical assaults, cruel discipline, excessive use of physical or chemical restraints, and unnecessary or incorrect medication are types of physical abuse. Sexual abuse can occur between family members, nursing home residents, and even staff and residents. Fear of a specific person can also be a sign.
Neglect of Residents in Nursing Homes
Types of neglect include residents being left alone or ignored by staff, dental problems, a resident afraid to leave his or her room and was injured with no signs of being treated. Residents can be exploited by bills not being paid by the payee or being manipulated into giving away their personal belongings.
Protection for the Residents
There may be times when you observe signs of abuse but were not actually a witness to what happened. The tangible signs or indicators of abuse, neglect or exploitation tend to be the ones that can be detected by trained observers such as facility staff members.
